History of Girls School
The historic 1930s Old Perth Girls School building is iconic in its ‘Egyptian Art-Deco’ grandeur (it’s a thing apparently – check out the pyramids on the roof!). The castle-like building operated as a school for thirty years and was then utilised as a Police centre for fifty years. With remnants spread across the property of both ventures, there is loads of historical sentiment and memories hidden throughout the building. A few of our favourites are the underground Cop Bar, kept a secret from the public for many years, the tudoresque panelling throughout the ceiling, and the names of heroic historical women bevelled into the faux limestone walls to inspire the girls during assembly.
The Western Australian not-for-profit registered charity ARTRAGE Inc took over the head lease and programming of the venue in 2018. It’s been featured as the host of the iconic 2018 interactive event; ‘A Midnight Visit’, become a major hub during the annual FRINGE WORLD Festival, and hosts the cosy winter cinema; Girls School Cinema.
Australian Development Capital, the owners of Girls School, has an exciting vision for the future of the building and surrounding community.
